Meet Ruben
I’ve been drawing and painting my whole life, since the third grade, and most likely since before that. One of the pivotal points in my obsession with art was watching my uncle Joel paint when I was a child. I was amazed at how he could just turn a blank paper that I considered nothing into something. Career wise, I am a retired tattooer of 15 years. I got to a point in my career where I did everything that I set out to do. My main goal was to only tattoo my own designs and not take commissions, which I did very successfully for the last 5 years of my tattoo career. But I’m ready for new challenges, and ready for a wider set of boundaries to roam free within. The only problem is I have a huge list of concepts to paint, and only some much time in a day. So needless to say, I ‘ll be busy for the next few decades.
The Technical Split
The conscious, the subconscious, and the drift. These are the three sources that I paint from. The paintings derived from my conscious mind will generally have a “cleaner” more thought out look. And tend to “make more sense”.
The paintings derived from my subconscious mind will generally be derived from universal consciousness and knowledge and make “less logic sense” and seem to have an Abstract look to them.
The paintings that I paint from “the drift” will come from knowledge and wisdom “downloaded” from universal consciousness in the hypognogue or Theta state. Which is the state of being not quite asleep and not quite awake, but rather in between states (while drifting off to sleep) These paintings will generally have more of a “surreal” look. And also where Salvador Dali painted from. As far as technique and medium, I’m in a transitional period now from liquid acrylic on watercolor paper, which is what I painted with while I was a tattoo artist for 15 years, to acrylic on canvas, and eventually mixing acrylic with oil on canvas.
The Inspiration
Personal growth is very important to me. I’ve studied personal development since I was 16, and feel like somewhat of a shaman or wizard or some shit like that. I’ve even been known to manifest shit at will at times. Other than creating art, teaching is another experience that has the ability to recharge my battery so to speak. I love sharing what I’ve learned, and helping others grow and heal. I beleive we’re all connected, so it’s within all of our best interests to help one another. Sometimes you don’t need a seminar or a new course to grow, or heal. Sometimes visual cues are great reminders of where you want to go. They say a picture is worth 1000 words.
Outside the Studio
One of my favorite things to do is basically to wander the city of San Francisco, and meet people. There is a certain magic here that I’ve never experienced anywhere else. It’s a very special thing when you can sit on a bus or a train with a homeless guy on one side of you and a millionaire on the other side of you, and everything in between as well. San Francisco is the only place where I didn't feel like I had to “fit in”. I’ve always felt free to just be me here. And if that isn’t magic then go and talk to that guy that got ate by a tiger about that shit.
